The Tempest in the East China Sea

Wuzhen Theatre Festival 2014

Adapting the Shakespearean Tempest to 1930s China, “the Tempest in the East China Sea” reconstructed the original storyline, with each character telling a distinctive narrative of the tempest. Invited and co-produced by Wuzhen Theatre Festival, 2014, “The Tempest in the East China Sea” was inspired by Wuzhen (an ancient watery town at the East China Sea) and created fully in residence. This localized production was not only enriched by the natural and cultural heritage of Wuzhen, but also greatly empowered by Chinese folk story-telling traditions and traditional Chinese music.
